Tried and Tested: Plastic-Free Swaps That Won’t Cost You or the Earth
After learning that every single piece of plastic ever made still exists, I knew it was time to make a change. Cutting down on plastic can feel overwhelming at first, but with the right tools, it’s surprisingly easy — and affordable. All of the products below are easy to find in the UK, work just as well (if not better) than their plastic-filled counterparts, and are kinder to the planet, animals, and our health.
1. Silicone Lids
Say goodbye to cling film forever. Silicone lids like the ones from Eco Lids are reusable, flexible, and fit over a wide range of containers. You can find them online at shops like Earth & Friends.
2. Mesh Fruit Bags
Swap single-use produce bags for reusable mesh ones. They’re lightweight (so won’t affect food scale pricing), washable, and widely available — you can pick them up in Sainsbury’s for about 30p or order online in bundles.
3. Laundry & Dishwasher Pods
I’m a big fan of Smol pods — they’re plastic-free, cruelty-free, and fully recyclable. Bonus: they offer a free trial so you can test before you commit. They work just as well (if not better!) than traditional pods.
4. Shampoo, Conditioner & Soap Bars
Ditch plastic bottles and go solid. These bars are long-lasting, natural, and easier on the environment. Look for options without palm oil (which contributes to deforestation). You’ll find great choices at Holland & Barrett, Lush, and Peace With The Wild.
5. Makeup Remover Pads
Halo Pads are reusable, soft, and only need warm water to work — no makeup remover required. One pad replaces up to 200 disposable cotton pads. Available at Boots, Amazon, and Holland & Barrett.
6. Reusable Cotton Pads
Ideal for applying toner or skincare products. Just be sure to choose ones made from organic cotton or bamboo — some cheaper versions contain polyester, which isn’t biodegradable.
7. Plastic-Free Cleaning Products
OceanSaver makes refillable cleaning products that use dissolvable pods instead of plastic bottles. You keep the spray bottle and only reorder the concentrated refills. Easy and waste-free.
8. Reusable Dish Sponges
Most standard sponges are breeding grounds for bacteria and made of plastic. Try a silicone sponge like the Wonder Sponge — it won’t harbour germs and can be sterilised in the dishwasher or boiling water.
9. Reusable Menstrual Products
The average person uses over 10,000 disposable menstrual products in their lifetime. Reusable options like menstrual cups, cloth pads, and period underwear (try Cheeky Wipes or WUKA) are not only better for the environment but save you money over time. For menstrual cups, take the Cup Quiz to find your best fit.
